Job Description:
 
We are entering an era of cloudification and softwarization of networks, enabled by breakthrough technologies such as software-defined networks (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV). With the advent of Internet of Things (IoT), billions of user devices need to be seamlessly managed and automatically onboarded with trust using a common network infrastructure. Human operators can no longer efficiently manage such a large-scale network manually. Thus, we need network and service automation where network management and control decisions are made autonomously and in real-time.
 
To reach the holy grail of end-to-end network automation, we need innovations and new research ideas in multiple areas. We need formal verification to automatically verify correctness and performance of network operations end-to-end and across multiple layers. The traditional model-based approaches for routing and traffic engineering need to be replaced by model-free machine learning based methods. We need efficient network representation languages that allow automated reasoning about network behavior and automated decision making for self-optimization and self-healing of networks.
 
Automated management of large-scale multi-domain networks (wireless, cellular, optical) require distributed and hierarchical controllers for scale which brings challenges of distributed coordination, and hierarchical control of network resources. Finally, we need new mechanisms for secure bootstrapping of IoT devices to the network and automated threat detection and mitigation in the core network fabric. With integrated efforts in all these areas, we can finally reach our holy grail of ‘zero touch networking’, where access to network infrastructure is as seamless as tapping into utilities such as water and electricity, which we now take for granted in our daily lives.
 
We are looking for talented and highly motivated students to work on problems related (but not limited) to: (1) end-to-end network verification; (2) architecture and algorithms for end-to-end cross-domain network slicing; (3) NFV resource orchestration; (4) machine learning based resource management for networks and clouds; (5) network representation and modeling; (6) distributed coordination for SDN controllers; and (7) security and privacy mechanisms for IoT and networks.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Innovative research work on topic with publications to a prestigious conferences and journals.
  • Implementation of prototype system.
  • Presentation of the work at the end of the internship to Bell Labs leadership. 

Student Criteria:

Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.

Must be enrolled as a full-time student.

 

Work Authorization: 

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred.  Will accept students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements or may consider sponsoring short-term J1 Visa PhD students dependent upon program requirements.

 

Education Requested: 

Must be pursuing a degree in Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics, Business Modeling, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Nanotechnology, Operations Research, Physics, Statistics, Systems Engineering and Telecommunications from an accredited college/university.

 
Education:
Enrolled in a PhD program (two or more years in a PhD program preferred) in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering.
 
Skills Required:
  • Familiarity with at-least one programming language (preferably Java, Python)
  • Familiarity with SDN controllers and related technologies (ONOS, ODL, P4)
  • Familiarity with cloud and edge computing is a plus (e.g., OpenStack, Kubernetes)
  • Knowledge of formal methods, machine learning is a plusGeneral mathematical maturity
  • Familiarity with NFV frameworks such as ONAP is desirable not not required
  • Familiarity with open source and systems hacking skillsGood grasp of Unix fundamentals
  • Good technical writing and presentation skills
