Job Description:
 

This is a summer intern position in the Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.) Lab at Nokia Bell Labs in New Jersey. The vision of the E.A.T. lab is to creative new modes of communication that go beyond the limitations of our current spoken and written word – thereby reducing the barriers between people.

The purpose of this position is to lead a creative technology project from conception to completion utilizing your skills in technology in new and creative ways.

We are looking for students that have a keen interest in technology in the broadest sense but that want to explore new ways of using and leveraging that technology in creative ways. We are looking for a student that always must do things differently and never uses technology in the way that it was originally intended.

We are looking for students in engineering subjects spanning physical sciences and computer sciences and the student will be selected based on their previous experience experimenting with technology and by their passion for doing something new and different.

     
    Key Responsibilities:
    • The candidate will perform various tasks within the broad remit of the E.A.T. lab and in particular work across a range of creative projects where emerging research meets creative practice.
    • The candidate will need to get up to speed quickly on various projects areas within E.A.T. and jointly decide with management what areas to focus on.
    • The candidate will apply their knowledge/understanding/training to the E.A.T. projects and provide some level of differentiation beyond the state of the art. 
    • The internship will start with an overview of the current activities we have in place and an overview of our vision for the lab. Then the student is expected to develop a new creative project concept that uses technology in an interesting way and that fits within the vision of the lab.
    • The project will last for 10 weeks and at the end of the project you are expected to show significant progress that can be presented to the entire lab in the form of a presentation or preferably an interactive installation
    • You are expected to be able to lead your own project and also collaborate with others (within the E.A.T. lab) and beyond on a number of potential other projects.
    Required Minimum Qualifications:
    Min qualifications are first year completed at 3rd level institute and proven track record of using technology in creative ways.
     
    Competence Requirements:
    • Great communicator.
    • Excellent written and presentation skills.
    • Creative thinking.

    An interest and skills in the general areas of creative technology using technologies such as:

    • ARVR/XR
    • Spatial audio
    • ML/AI
    • Creative coding
    • Design
    • Multimedia
    • Musical performance and composition relating to technology
