JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The internship is for a student roboticist who will be challenged to solve a critical automation need in an industry vertical by building a technology demonstrator with mentoring from Bell Labs researchers.

 

In this role, you will be part of the BHAG Realization Lab – BHAG stands for Big Hairy Audacious Goal. You will be working hands-on on aerial and ground robot systems that operate autonomously or are teleoperated in a novel manner using wearable devices. You will be designing solutions for practical challenges from industrial/vertical use cases in a cross-disciplinary and collaborative way. Moreover, all our robots will be designed to operate on the most advanced communication networks! Candidates with skills in robotics hardware, software, or both are invited to apply.
 
Key Responsibilities / Functions
  • Design and build prototype aerial/ground robots for industrial/vertical use cases
  • Integrate robot sensors, actuators, controllers, computers, and other components
  • Design CAD models, mechanical designs, and enclosures
  • Develop and test prototype PCBs
  • Design and implement perception, planning, and control algorithms
  • Develop and test in both simulation and actual environments
  • Collaborate with team members to create innovative ideas and rapidly develop proofs-of-concept and prototype solutions 
Qualifications and Skills:
 
  • Strong knowledge of CAD tools such as Solidworks, Creo, Autodesk and experience with 3D-printing.
  • Previous experience building robots including hardware and electrical design.
  • Strong knowledge of microcontrollers, GPUs, PCB design, and embedded Linux.
  • Strong knowledge of ROS, Gazebo, PX4, MAVROS, OpenCV.
  • Strong software development skills in Python, C/C++.
  • Coursework or knowledge of control theory, localization, path planning and navigation, computer vision, UAVs.
In addition, the following skills are required:
  • Strong team player with ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and written/verbal communication skills 
Student Criteria:
Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.
Must be enrolled as a full-time student, pursuing a Master’s/PhD degree.
 
 
Education Requested: 
Must be pursuing a degree in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, Embedded systems, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering or related fields from an accredited college/university.
 
Cross disciplinary record of study and research investigation is essential for this role as well as demonstrable experience in conceiving and developing robotic solutions 
 
 
 
 
 
Work Authorization: 
U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred.  Will accept students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements or may consider sponsoring short-term J1 Visa PhD students dependent upon program requirements.
