Job Summary

Nokia is seeking an experienced HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Manager to oversee safety programs at our Murray Hill location as well as remotely to several sites in the US. Under the direction of the Head of HSSE Americas, the HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) Manager is responsible to educate, train, and provide support to operations in the development and execution of consistent safety and environmental management programs.  The HSE Manager will conduct accident investigations, develop accident trends, and develop programs for improving performance.  Ensure compliance with all safety and environmental programs.  Contribute to a proactive safety and environmental program. Improve the quality of safety and environmental management processes following established regulations, policies, standards, and practices.

  

The HSE Manager will be reporting to the Head of HSSE Americas, support the Americas HSSE team with project risk assessment, contractor approval and onboarding, and H&S training development and delivery.  Site H&S management of company facilities and laboratories.  Supporting the Global HSSE team activities in the implementation of key global programs through co-ordination, management, and reporting progress against centrally driven HSSE programs. 

 

This position will establish rapport, credibility, trust, and respect throughout the organization at all levels and with external parties, and be viewed as a team player.

Job Responsibilities

  • Participate as active member of the site and facilities management team to assist in supervising health and safety management activities of the Murray Hill site and the Bell Labs.
  • Work with project procurement team on contractor approval and assessment activities to ensure sub-contractor H&S maturity and ability to comply with Nokia health and safety standards.
  • Establish, coordinate, and train emergency response team members at remote locations.
  •  Interface with senior managers of other business groups to deliver health and safety project information, corrective actions, investigation results, and general direction for teams to align with company H&S policies.      
  • Oversee and audit sub-contractor compliance with Federal, State, Local, and Nokia internal health and safety standards and requirements.
  • Perform worksite audits, inspections and evaluations on company operations, and remote job sites where internal or external employees are working on high-risk work.
  • Create injury and illness reports for injuries, incidents, and near misses.
  • Host safety committee meetings at Murray Hill site and/or through virtual media.
  • Prepare and submit Tier II, SARA, CUPA, and environmental reporting to fulfil city, county, state, and federal compliance reporting requirements.

Qualifications – Internal Education and Knowledge

  • Bachelor's degree in a Safety, Science or Environmental Safety program, or equivalent,
  • At least 5 years’ experience in the area of construction, manufacturing, general industry.  Safety regulatory compliance required.  Hazardous Materials and Environmental management experience a plus.
  • In-depth understanding of the language of regulatory agencies governing Safety, and the ability to interpret those to the organization, required. Demonstrated knowledge of, and skill in performing root cause analysis, risk assessments, work plan development, performance improvement techniques
  • Advanced skills in using spreadsheets (e.g., MS Excel), Word, and proficiency with data analyses, required. Strong organizational skills, and aptitude for detail, required.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills required. Demonstrated presentation skills and experience conducting educational sessions required.
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Ability to set personal and organizational goals and objectives, maintain timelines, deadlines, and deliverables.

  • Innovative and creative approach to problem solving and operations

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and evolving environment.
  • Ability to travel last minute to various domestic locations to complete post-incident investigations, site health and safety assessments, up to 50% of the time.
