About People Direction 

The People Direction function will bring thought leadership and best-in-class people practices, policies and frameworks to enable a decentralized operating model. This function will lead and enable people strategy, non-negotiable policies and frameworks to both fulfill important legal requirements and to support and evolve strategic choices in regard to Nokia's people and company culture. People Direction teams will be strongly aligned to Nokia strategy, and will work in collaboration with a wide range of stakeholders, including GLT, the Board of Directors, Business Groups, Central functions, suppliers, vendors, auditors and others. 


Mission/Purpose of role

As part of Nokia’s business strategy, the People organization needs to enable the business to own its end-to-end P&L, while also managing Nokia level non-negotiables and critical risks in the new decentralized Mode of Operations (MoO) The Leader, Performance and Total Rewards is responsible for the strategy, development, and coordinating the implementation and administration of frameworks that allow for business flexibility, while overseeing associated funding mechanisms and risk mitigation strategies for global performance management, compensation and benefits for Nokia overall. The selected candidate will work to ensure the competitiveness of the total employment package for Nokia employees. They will evolve and strengthen the link between pay and performance by co-creating a new approach to Performance Management that supports Nokia’s business strategy and new ways of working., driving more feedback and learning. In order to be successful in this mission, the candidate will manage a small team of compensation and benefits experts within the People Direction organization and will work across the People Organization’s decentralized support model for end-to-end visibility and co-creation on all performance, compensation, benefits, and recognition topics.


Main Responsibility Areas

  • Drive a global Performance and Total Rewards strategy that supports Nokia’s ability to attract and retain a diverse, global workforce of top talent, and to automate and simplify the employee experience as much as possible.

  • As the recognized leader of this functional area of expertise, acts as a global authority and final reference point in the company for specialist input on relevant topics and contributes to relevant external initiatives such as the People & Planet report.

  • Develops relevant and creative solutions to meet current and evolving business needs with significant strategic impact to ensure programs that are cost effective, consistent with or ahead of labor market trends, and aligned with Nokia business strategy and culture.

  • Oversee strategic planning and design of all annual compensation and benefits program cycles such as annual salary review

  • Responsible for executive compensation planning, benchmarking, packages, and contracts in close partnership with the Legal & Compliance function

  • Conduct People Organization work with the Personnel Committee of the board of directors on behalf of the CEO and CPO, working with their offices to coordinate deliverables and present recommendations as required. Keeps key stakeholder groups, including the People LT, regularly updated on progress and initiatives that are underway with the Personnel Committee.

  • Working closely with the Leader, People Direction and the Leader, People Function Strategy and Controlling, ensures that appropriate compensation and benefits governance processes are in place that are simple, expedient but also serve a meaningful risk mitigation function.

  • Ensures all programs align to company leadership behaviours, culture and values, and support the desired employment experience, in partnership with People Direction peers.

  • Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders in a decentralized, business- driven organization model

  • Monitors and measures the effectiveness of all in-scope policies, programs, and frameworks, recommending revisions that align with business strategy as needed. Stays informed on external market trends and practices to provide thought leadership to Nokia stakeholders on current and future market trends that could affect Nokia’s employment strategy;  responsible for research and benchmarking activities in this area

  • Works with BGs and functions to communicate new policies and frameworks and annual program launches to all Nokia stakeholders, including communications methods to all Nokia employees when needed, leveraging the broader team of specialists as needed.

  • Owns HR M&A activities including governance and compliance, risk assessment, and M&A project management as required

  • Directly manages and develops a small team of global compensation and benefits experts and builds strong succession plans to ensure continuity

  • Role models Nokia values and leadership behavior to inspire and motivate a broader teams and stakeholders, creating environments of psychological safety and transparency.

Position Requirements (Experience/Skills/Knowledge)

Essential Requirements:

  • Recognized as a leading authority in performance and total rewards as demonstrated by experience and track record of proven results in either compensation and/or benefits

  • Understanding of Nokia’s business strategy and its impact, for example, on attraction and retention of talent

  • Ability to lead and influence through collaboration across units and businesses, often when priorities may be in conflict

  • Willingness to question the status quo and recommend innovative solutions

  • Ability to synthesize data analytics in order to derive insight from performance and compensation data that will inform strategy and implementation decisions

  • Willingness to confront and resolve conflict through discussion and joint problem solving, creating environments of psychological safety and transparency

  • Discretion and professional privacy in dealing with sensitive topics., including material non-disclosure

  • Understanding of HR processes and tools

  • Knowledge of alternative industry practices, methodologies, and benchmarks

  • Excellent written and verbal communication and negotiation skills

  • Professionalism - Acts in accordance with job-related values, morals, and standards
