Job Description

Join our Bell Labs Reliability Physics Team for Summer 2021 to evaluate low temperature solders (LTS) for assembling electronics in telecommunications equipment.  Technical, economic, and environmental requirements are driving LTS development and applications.  The leading alloy candidates for achieving soldering below 200ºC are based on the Bi-Sn solder system. During this internship, you will learn our motivations for usage of LTS, the challenges of implementation, and the related work projects being done within Nokia and through projects in academia and industry consortia.

 Job Responsibilities & Competencies

  • Perform quality and reliability analyses and characterization of low melting point Pb-free solder joints using metallographic cross sectioning and optical and scanning electron microscopy.
  • Compare time zero and thermally cycled samples.
  • Assess performance in terms of microstructural evolution of the solder joints.
  • Correlate performance and microstructure to thermal cycling and surface mount assembly parameters.
  • Competency and skills in a laboratory setting will be essential for success in this applied engineering and sciences project.

Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of surface mount solder assembly processes.
  • Experience with metallographic sample preparation and microscopic methods for documentation.
  • Familiarity with Pb-free solder alloys, particularly low melting Bi-Sn alloys.
  • Overall GPA of 3.0/4.0 or above.
  • Must be enrolled as a full-time student.
  • Must be pursuing a BS or higher degree in Materials, Industrial, or Mechanical Engineering, or else in a closely related engineering/science field, from an accredited US college/university.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident preferred, may accept MS or PhD students on F-1 Visa dependent upon program requirements.
