Nokia Bell Labs conducts research in a wide variety of topics, ranging from leading wireless and optical fiber technologies, to cloud-based and highly distributed computing, to fundamental physics, mathematics and computing. It is the birthplace of the transistor, information theory, cellular networking, Unix and C, and many other fundamental technological discoveries and inventions. Bell Labs researchers have won 9 Nobel Prizes, 3 Turing Awards, and several National Medals of Science and of Technology and Innovation.

Nokia Bell Labs France is seeking interns to participate in our teams defining the global 5G NR network, developing protocols, standards and architecture solutions. The ideal candidate should have knowledge on end-to-end mobile network architectures and strong research skills with analytical/theoretical capabilities and simulation or prototyping experience. Successful candidates are expected to solve complex problems, analyzing and proving the benefits of the concepts, evaluate their performance and support the standardization of these concepts in standardization bodies like 3GPP.

Opportunities on following duties and responsibilities:

·         Develop novel user-plane and control-plane radio resource management protocol concepts for 5G NR, model them in C++ simulator software and evaluate their performance via simulation campaigns

·         Develop innovations on ML/AI/DL in mobility management and beamforming ;

·         Performance assessment in IIoT scenarios using ray tracing tools

·         Parallelizing C++ system-level simulation software – possibility doing the planning from scratch – using features from latest versions (C++11, C++14, C++17 and C++20)

·         Integration of best parts of existing system-level simulation libraries into one common Nokia simulator platform

·       Internship is for the period of 4 months

 

Essential skills

·       M.Sc. or similar in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related discipline

·       Linux environment skills (e.g. bash scripting)

·       Good knowledge on one or more of the following programming languages: Matlab, Python and (specially) C++ (incl. STL and design patterns)

·        Strong analytical skills, eager to find innovative/disruptive solutions to problems;

·       Be self-motivated, passionate and hands-on

·       Strong written and verbal communication skills, be able to express him/herself fluently in English to an external audience

Desired (One of more of the following skills ):

·         Good knowledge in the state-of-the-art of one or more of the following subjects: 3GPP radio access networks (with focus on L1-L3 protocol stacks), E2E network architectures, TCP/IP networking protocols, cloud-RAN, network function virtualization, data analytics

·         Previous experience in dynamic, time-driven, system-level simulations

·         Practical experience with machine learning techniques and related tools

·         Experience of ML/AI/DL working in a successful project with referred deliverables

·         RF Propagation and hands-on experience with ray tracing tools (e.g. WinProp, Wireless Insight)

·         Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and associated software (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS, etc)

·         C++ profiling tools (Valgrind, GProf, etc…)

·         LFS or Grid Engine as a Linux farm job scheduling environment

 

Areas of expertise (seen as an advantage)

·         Mobility Management and Beamforming

·         Proven software development and optimization skills with parallelization project experience:

o   ideally experience in Open MP and CUDA/GPU

o   C++ software architecture development/transformation in terms of balancing / optimizing the SW executed in GPU vs. CPU

o   QT

o   MATLAB Cuda experience

o   Advanced skills in Linux development: GUI (e.g. Eclipse) and debugging

·         Hands-on experience with CAD software tools (e.g. Solidworks, AutoCAD, SketchUp)

·         Automation engineering and industrial networks
