Job Description
 
We encourage applicants with research interests in the areas of complex photonic devices applied to communications. Selected candidates will join Bell Labs researchers in working on various aspects of novel device and integration projects including design and test of photonic chips and/or thermal management of complex 2.5D and 3D opto-electronic assemblies.
 

Summer 2021 Term 

Job Responsibilities & Competencies

The summer intern projects may include a broad range of aspects including simulations / modeling, fabrication and testing of novel devices and sub-systems. 
The successful applicant will join the Hybrid Integration Group in Murray Hill, New Jersey (USA). The team:

  • Performs cutting-edge research in the field of next-generation telecommunications and computing systems across multiple scales (device-, board- and rack-levels). 
  • Research activities include: green thermal management solutions for datacenters, photonic device design and fabrication and heterogeneous integration of complex opto-electronic sub-systems. 

Qualifications
 
Successful candidates will be pursuing a Masters/PhD degree and have expertise in at least one of the following areas:
  1. Experience with semiconductor process techniques as commonly used for fabrication of photonic integrated circuits, optical waveguide technologies, and MEMS systems.
  2. Simulation or experimental characterization of two-phase thermal management of high power dissipation devices at the package or device level.
  • Problem-solving mind, creative and good communication skills
  • Experience with measurement techniques, calibrations and data processing  
  • Experience with Matlab, Python, SolidWorks, LabView, COMSOL or other design tools
  • Experience with passive two-phase heat spreading and cooling systems such as thermosyphons, oscillating heat pipes, etc.
  • Experience with mechanical design and micro-fabrication techniques 

Student Criteria:

  • Overall GPA of 3.0 / 4.0 or above
  • Must be enrolled in master’s or Ph.D. programs
