Job Responsibilities & Competencies

Add a task adaptation framework to a currently operational cloud-based robotics system geared towards enterprise applications. This adaptation framework modulates individual robot tasks in a multi-robot environment to ensure timely completion of the overall mission. In order to accomplish this objective, the task adaptation framework needs to interface with various components of the robotic cloud-based control system such as an orchestrator, a network service manager, map and planning services, and applications running on the robots. The framework also takes inputs from the environment comprising robot-impacting human activity. Simple illustrative examples of such adaptation would be to send video at lower rates from a surveillance robot when network connectivity is poor or slow down the speed of a robot when human activity is detected in its vicinity.

The entire robotic system has also been mirrored in a virtual setting. The emulated robots (including sensors and actuators), the emulated environment, and real software stack (for robotic control and cloud-robot connectivity) are part of this digital mirror. This test bed provides a platform for research and analysis of algorithms for predicting and improving performance of the cloud robotics system in real deployments with network impairments and in dynamic operational environments.

The expectation is that the task adaptation framework will be implemented and tested in this setting before porting it to the real world.

Qualifications
  • Pursuing Masters or Ph D. in Computer Engineering, Robotics or related discipline.
  • Experience with ROS programming environment
  • Experience in robot emulation including environment modelling and physics
  • Experience with Unity3D and Gazebo platforms
  • Hands on experience in building software systems using open source tools and frameworks on Linux and Windows platforms.
  • Skilled in programming languages like Python, Java, Node.js.
